Don’t Get Left Behind!
Social Media is a Co-operative
Never before has communication and interaction among housing co-op members across Canada been more important than now. The concept of “Social Media is a Co-operative” was introduced during a social media workshop at the CHF Canada Annual General Meeting in Calgary, Alberta on June 7, 2013 by Sophie Taylor, Manager Member Services for Peel/Halton CHF and Charles Sandor, Social Media Developer for iBusiness Media.
The End of Operating Agreements (EOA) loom large over co-ops all across our nation and decisions on how co-ops will deal with EOA will determine the future of co-ops everywhere. Technology and social media, when used effectively will bridge communication gaps, keep members informed, not just on EOA, but on all topics and issues affecting housing co-ops.
The Federation has committed to making the best use of technology to further enhance our ability to reach our members easily and offer guidance and education in a way that was not possible in the past.
How should you interact with your fellow members online? Practice good social media “Netiquette”!
What have we been doing?
We have gone paperless and use iPad’s to conduct our meetings
Incorporated a variety of social media platforms including, developing a Facebook Business page and website, a customized Twitter page, a LinkedIn Company page and our own YouTube Channel.
Updated our education program to include courses on technology and social media.
In March 2013, we launched the Canadian Co-operative Network (CCN), a blog/news magazine that provides news and commentary to all housing co-op members.
In May 2013, the Federation used technology to have a director attend the PH-CHF AGM in Mississauga, ON from 3,400 km away in Edmonton, Alberta. The director gave their election speech via a Google+ Hangout. Learn more about Hangouts here.
If you want to learn more or need help in developing your own technologically centered strategies, please feel free to contact us. In the meantime, keep checking our website as we will be updating information both here and on the CCN.
